Dear Friend, I was 14 years old when I first dreamt of playing major college football. I was watching the Ohio State/Michigan game on television and remember the energy and excitement being contagious. Little did I know then that I would actually realize my dream of playing Big 10 football. In 1999 I played in eight games for the Wolverines and lettered. In 2000 I became their starter at defensive tackle. I went on to start in over 25 games and after graduating, I signed as a free agent with the Detroit Lions. I thought that the fame, popularity, power, money and lifestyle that football provided would bring me the happiness I was searching for. As a result I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor. When I suffered a knee injury with the Detroit Lions I began surveying all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun. I began giving careful thought to my ways. I realized that I had worked very hard to achieve things that didn't bring me satisfaction. Yet, in the eyes of others, I was very "successful". NONE OF THE THINGS I SOUGHT BROUGHT ME HAPPINESS. I was looking for happiness in all the wrong places. Then God grabbed a hold of my life. It was with my heart that I believed what Jesus wanted with my life, and then with my mouth that I confessed my sins to God, asked for forgiveness, and accepted Jesus as my Savior and my life changed forever. I immediately found peace, comfort, and happiness. My life completely changed as I immersed myself in all that God had to offer. 2 Corinthians 5:17 describes what happened to me best: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come." I truly feel everyday is a bonus. I am happy to have found true peace and fulfillment. I try to bring honor and glory to God in everything that I do. That is a tough thing to do but Jesus said this, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." Matthew 19:26 My life changed once I understood John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." Eternal life in heaven with God, that's why everyday is a "bonus". I feel like I have already won the game of life. God has great things in store for you life too!
